“Stay black, payback from way back. I’m the homie but the motherf****n’ homie don’t play that.”
If we ever needed a time capsule for the turbulent political moment that was 2017, a solid place to start would be the comments section of BADBADNOTGOOD, Kaytranada and Snoop Dogg’s collaboration, “Lavender (Nightfall Remix).”
The video itself definitely seems designed to court outrage. It’s not exactly subtle, and it shouldn’t be. Family-man/clown and weed smoker Michael Rapaport is gunned down in his car by police. A teen films it on his phone, uploading it to ClownTUBE. Clown Donald Trump gets bonked on the head at a press conference. Snoop Dogg stubs out a joint and gets off his throne. Cut to Snoop holding Clown Trump hostage alongside a couple of Harley Quinn cosplayers. Snoop points his gun to Trump’s head and pulls the trigger. The classic “Bang!” sign unfurls from the barrel. Clown Trump tries to bogart Snoop’s joint and nearly gets smacked for it. A commercial for “Snoop Loops” plays on the TV.
Like I said, subtle it ain’t. But that groove. My GOD that groove. BADBADNOTGOOD and Kaytranada already put out a great video for this instrumental, yet Snoop still brings it to another level with his legendary flow.
Are these the best songs of 2017? Probably not. But in another sense, definitely yes. These are some songs that really made an impression on me for a variety of reasons. I hope you enjoy them. -pocoGRANDES
