“I’m on smoko, so leave me alone!”
Some songs capture a feeling and subject matter so perfectly they feel instantly iconic. A good example might be Barry White’s “Let’s Get it On,” the ultimate ode to sexy times. Everything about it, from the lavish production to the smooth vocals, works together to produce that feeling of sensuality.
On the other end of the spectrum are Australian rockers The Chats and their song “Smoko.” From the moment I saw lead singer Eamon Sandwith’s glorious mullet crest the top of a sand dune I knew I was in for something special. Their sound is straight classic lo-fi DIY punk rock, and their lyrics tap into an all too familiar blue-collar frustration: being bothered while you’re off the clock. When Sandwith laments “ah, what time is it? Is it smoko?!” all I want to do is perch atop a milk crate throne and join him.
Are these the best songs of 2017? Probably not. But in another sense, definitely yes. These are some songs that really made an impression on me for a variety of reasons. I hope you enjoy them. -pocoGRANDES
